Allergy
Allergy is a term used to describe an adverse or bad reaction that the body has to a particular substance. These substances are not usually harmful but in certain individuals they cause a reaction every time they come into contact with them.
Allergies are very common and according to the latest NHS figures affect around one in four people in the UK at some time in their lives. The number of people affected by allergies has increase steadily over the last few years.
An allergy develops when an allergen triggers the immune system, the body's natural defence against germs and viruses. The immune system wrongly recognises that allergen to be a threat and release chemicals called antibodies to destroy it. Antibodies are special proteins made in the immune system to fight off viruses and infections that could harm us.
