Diabetes treatment available at your local pharmacy
Our roving reporter visits his local pharmacy to check out their diabetes screening service.
Diabetes is the UK's most common long-term disease and affects around 3 in 100 people. With it being National Diabetes Week, I thought I'd find out about the diabetes screening service available at the local pharmacy.
When I arrived I was ushered into the private consultation room. First of all the pharmacist checked my blood pressure with an inflated armband (high blood pressure is known as one of the most common causes of diabetes). Next the pharmacist checked my blood sugar levels by taking a blood sample with a special monitor, which was nothing more than a quick pinprick and wasn't painful at all.
After checking both readings, the pharmacist told me that whilst my blood sugar levels were at a safe level I should consider making small lifestyle changes to lower my blood pressure. This included giving up smoking, getting more exercise and eating more healthily. The pharmacist also gave me a blood pressure leaflet to remind me of what I needed to be doing to get it lowered
I also learned that Diabetes can affect anyone at any age so if you find yourself feeling thirsty more often and more tired then it's worth getting it checked out with the pharmacy's diabetes screening service.
