Do you have an eating disorder?
Health problems including anorexia nervosa, bulimia and other types of eating disorders aren't just for women. They are also becoming more common in men, suggest NHS statistics. And as a result, the Royal College of GPs is recommending doctors to keep an eye out for the signs in male patients.
There are no official statistics for people with eating disorders in this country. However NHS figures show that during the last 10 years, the number of men admitted to hospitals for eating disorders rose by 66 percent.
According to the eating disorders charity Beat (www.b-eat.co.uk), around 1.6 million people in this country are affected by an eating disorder, of whom approximately 11 percent are men. The charity estimates that 10 percent of sufferers are anorexic, 40 percent are bulimic and the rest have other types of disorders such as binge eating disorder.
So what are the signs of an eating disorder in men? Here's what to look out for:
- Were you overweight as a child and bullied because of it?
- Are you often on a strict diet?
- Do you participate in a sport that requires a specific body weight?
- Do you have an image-conscious job (model, actor, entertainer etc)?
- Are you obsessed with your physical appearance?
- Do you have low self-esteem?
- Do you spend countless hours at the gym?
If you’re worried that you might have an eating disorder, see your GP or ask your pharmacist for advice.
