Get your kids back into sport

If your children are more likely to be found in front of the TV or playing computer game after school than running around the playing field with their friends, they're not the only ones.

A survey of 1,500 children aged six to 15 has found that twice as many spend their free time watching TV than playing sport. And while two thirds of the kids had a mobile phone and three quarters a games console, one in 10 didn't know how to ride a bike and 15 percent didn't know how to swim.

The survey, carried out by British Triathlon and Tata Steel, also found that 22 percent of children had never run a distance of 400 metres. Fifteen percent also said they'd never played sport with their parents.

In a separate study, published in the journal Acta Paediatrica, researchers from Sweden and Denmark suggest that a lack of exercise is linked with a higher risk of heart disease in children as young as nine years old.

"We believe that our study demonstrates a clear clinical association between physical inactivity and multiple cardiovascular disease risk factors in children," says Dr Tina Tanha, the Swedish expert who led the research.
