If you pack on the pounds when you reach middle age it could increase your risk of certain types of dementia say scientists writing in the journal Neurology.
In a study carried out in Sweden, the researchers discovered people who were overweight or obese when they were middle aged had an 80 percent higher risk of developing dementia – including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia – when they were elderly, compared to those who were of normal weight.
The study's results add to the growing evidence that keeping your weight down in middle age could reduce your risk of dementia when you're older, the researchers explain.
