Mum-to-be supplements

Planning on having a baby and wondering what is best for being in tip top condition? Ask your pharmacist about the following supplements...

Folic acid:

Taking folic acid tablets is recommended by health experts prior to and during pregnancy (the UK government recommends taking a 400mcg supplement from the time you stop using contraception up until the 12th week of pregnancy). This is important as it has been shown to lower the risk of certain birth defects including spina bifida.

Multivitamins:

If you also want to take a multivitamin and mineral supplement, make sure it's a formulation designed to be taken during pregnancy - this should also include the correct amount of folic acid, which means you don't have to take a separate folic acid tablet. A pregnancy multivitamin should also be free from vitamin A, which pregnant women, as well as women who are trying to start a family, should avoid since it could be harmful to a developing baby.

Omega-3s:

Many nutritionists believe omega-3 fatty acids – found mainly in oily fish - are essential for pregnant women as well as for the development of a baby's brain and eyesight. Again, take one that's designed to be used during pregnancy or ask your pharmacist for their recommendation.

Don't forget, though these supplements, and others like them, are safe to take during pregnancy, you should always tell your doctor or midwife if you decide to take any nutritional products while pregnant.
