- Aloe vera, after-sun or calamine lotion
- Antihistamine tablets (for allergic reactions)
- Rehydration salts and diarrhoea relief medicines
- Water purification tablets (for abroad)
- Multi vitamin supplements
- Pain killers (aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen)
- Antiseptic cream, wipes, plasters and dressings
- Your regular contraception plus extra condoms
- Travel sickness pills or travel wristbands
- Flight socks (for air travel)
- Decongestant (for air travel)
- Travel insurance is also a must, but nowadays you can buy it the day before you go from any number of high-street outlets.
If however you want to qualify for free, state-provided medical treatment in an EU country, you'll need an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which can take up to 10 days to organise. Apply online or call 0845 606 2030 to apply by phone.
