Top tips for healthy holiday eating

Summer holidays are a time for relaxing, treating yourself and recharging your batteries. But it needn't mean piling on the pounds or letting your cholesterol levels creep up.

Here are some top tips for keeping cholesterol levels down during the holiday season:

Plan ahead. Ask for menus in advance or a translation if you don't understand what's in a dish. Opt for the lower fat options avoiding creamy sauces, pastry, cheese and fatty meats such as sausages and burgers.

Have a good breakfast to help you avoid unhealthy snacking later on. Include protein (egg, fish, peanut butter) to help sustain you. Swap baguettes for wholegrain bread and choose a wholegrain breakfast cereal, a fruit and fibre-rich muesli or granola, and use olive oil or sunflower spread.

Plan daily activities such as an early morning jog along the beach, swim in the pool, a day's sightseeing on foot or a walk after your evening meal.

Max out on fruit and veg - make sure you have at least two portions at every meal. Take advantage of dishes that contain beans, peas, lentils and couscous.

Make the most of any local fish on offer. Indulge in crayfish, sardines, fresh tuna, crab or a platter of health sushi. Check out the local vegetarian options.
