Why marriage may save your heart
The health benefits of being married – particularly if you're a man – are well known. And now researchers have come up with one more. If you're married or in a committed relationship, they say, you're more likely to seek treatment for a heart attack earlier than a single guy.
Since the earlier a heart attack is treated, the more effective that treatment may be, getting fast medical help is crucial, claim the researchers whose report has been published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
According to the researchers, married men are seen by a medical professional half an hour sooner on average than single, divorced or widowed men after first experiencing chest pain. And that, they say, could make all the difference.
The researchers have a theory why this happens. Women may urge their partners to get help as soon as any symptoms such as chest pain start. But when married women suffer heart problems, they don't seek treatment sooner than single women, the study suggests.
