Hormones have protective effects
There are several types of cancer that are more common in men than women, including stomach, liver and colon cancer.
Many experts believe this discrepancy is caused by lifestyle factors – for instance, diet or smoking habits. But biological differences may also play a part.
Researchers writing in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, for instance, claim that women are less likely to develop stomach cancer than men because they are protected by the hormone oestrogen. Their study suggests oestrogen reduces the gastric inflammation that can lead to cancer.
Meanwhile, men may have a higher risk of developing some cancers, but women are far more likely to develop inflammatory diseases and allergies, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and asthma, say experts writing in the medical publication FASEB Journal. In this instance, men may be protected by the hormone testosterone, say the researchers.
