Dance your way to health
Can't get enough of the new series of Strictly? Then why not step onto the dancefloor yourself? Dancing can help lower your resting heart rate, lower your blood pressure and even lower your cholesterol. It also burns just as many calories as activities such as walking, swimming or cycling.
And did you know that dancing is also good for your bones and joints, not to mention your memory and emotional wellbeing? But which style of dance should you try?
- Ballroom: The great thing about ballroom dancing – apart from the fabulous frocks – is that there are several dances to learn, so you’ll never get bored. The faster-paced dances help strengthen your heart and lungs, while the more sedate moves of the waltz, for instance, strengthen your muscles and bones while doing wonders for your posture
- Salsa: A fast-paced, hot-blooded dance, salsa really gets your heart pumping. It uses lots of hip movements, which helps to keep you flexible, while your legs, arms and stomach get a great workout too.
- Belly dancing: Researchers from the University of Worcester have discovered women who regularly go to belly dancing classes enjoy several benefits: 20 per cent had better flexibility, 18 per cent felt more relaxed and 20 per cent claimed they enjoyed the social benefits.
- Line dancing: Very gentle and low impact, thanks to the fact that steps are walked, line dancing is ideal if you’re not used to exercising or if you’re recovering from an illness.
Fine a class near you by checking your local newspapers and libraries, or look up dance schools in the Yellow Pages.
